Planar Chaos Novel Spoilers

Chapter One as we all know is just Jhoria casting some big glassy spell, Corus going mad and throwing her and Venser into it.

In Chapter two we find out that because Venser, Jhoria and Corus all helped cast the spell, they are immune to it. They then leave the glass cloud and find Corus dead from destroying his own mana star. They also rejoin Teferi who has most definitely lost his planeswalkeryness.

In chapter three Venser, Jhoria and Teferi are hiking through Shiv when Venser starts hearing a voice in his head, telling him to "Sleep now" and "rest." A mini basilisk then pops out of the sand and Venser reveals he has some sort of dormant power which allows him to flicker from reality. At the end of the chapter the group meet some Ghitu builders who agree to help rebuild Venser's Ambulator.

In chapter four they start to build the new ambulator (the one on the front of the novel) and Teferi agrees to stay behind when they use it to travel to Urborg.

Chapter five begins with Venser and Jhoria testing the Ambulator. Everything seems ok until Venser hears the voice again, panics, and everything is engulfed in a white light. We then cut to Karn and Jeska in the blind eternities, not really doing anything. Karn thinks there is some sort of nasty villian somewhere out there but that's as specifc as it gets. We then go back to Jhoria who has been transported to Urborg with Venser nowhere in sight. The place is freezing for some reason and she is approached by a mysterious stranger.
"Urza?" she whispers, but it's not, that's just Scott McGough being incredibly nasty. It's Jodah and he agrees to take her to Lord Windgrace the planeswalker.

In chapter six Venser arrives in Urborg, his ambulator stuck in the mud. He looks around and is surprised to see phyrexians (designed to work in cold weather conditions) pouring out of the Stronghold rift waging war with Windgrace's creatures. Eventually they're beaten back and as they are, Windgrace comes for Venser.

In chapter seven Windgrace puts Venser on trial for all of his machine building. He claims that it was Venser's first ambulator that sparked the cold weather and allowed the phyrexians through the rift. Venser then hears the voice again and Windgrace explains that it is the 'Weaver King' a sort of psychic vampire which travels from mind to mind. Windgrace eventually determines that Venser is not in league with the Weaver King and forces him to become a loyal servant.

Chapter eight is about the Weaver King's background. He was a nomad who took refuge in the Stronghold's City of Traitors. However, Volrath used him in an experiment, twisting his mind until he died and became a shadow creature. His right hand man, Dinne, was a Paladin En Vec who was given to the weaver king as a plaything. When Volrath fell, the weaver king drifted out of reality before being called back by the rift. And now he has an army of phyrexians.
After this brief history lesson, we go back to Jhoria and Jodah. They talk about the weaver king a bit more then meet Venser and Windgrace.

In Chapter 9 Jodah gets interogated a bit by Windgrace before Windgrace decides to pick up Teferi from Shiv. Teferi attempts to reason with Windgrace, trying to convince him to sacrifice his planeswalking powers to close the rift. Windgrace refuses. He then decides to bring the group to talk with Freyalise.

Chapter 10 begins with Dinne, the shadow Pally en Vec fighting and defeating an Urborg chief for no real reason at all. It then goes back to Windgrace and his group in the blind eternities, talking to Freyalise. Nothing new is revealed and they depart, leaving Jhoria with Freyalise.

In Chapter 11, Windgrace releases Teferi and Jodah, seeing no further use for them. Jodah then sets about making a tunnel to save Jhoria from Freyalise before Teferi comes along and persuades him that Jhoira needs the Ambulator. Unfortunatley, Windgrace has it. Venser appears and agrees to help get the ambulator and take it to Jhoria. Then they both tell Teferi to get lost.

In chapter 12, Jhoria watches as Freyalise battles hordes of Phyrexians with her swarm of slivers. Apparently the slivers have no queen or master, so they just listen to anyone who wants to control them. When they are beaten back, Freyalise convinces Jhoria to find Radha, who is currently battling Ice giants somewhere or other.

In Chapter 13, Jodah arrives in Skyshroud and tells Jhoria to meet them somewhere when they have the ambulator. He then takes his transport tunnel back to urborg. As he and Venser are about to set out to take the ambulator back, Teferi decides to attempt to reason with Windgrace again, probably as a distraction for Jodah and Venser.

In Chapter 14 Jodah and Venser battle some gladehunters (Windgrace's guys) to get the ambulator back. In the process, Venser gets caught in a spiky viney tree thing. He accidentally uses his power again, flickering in and out of reality before the weaver king secretly saves Venser by calming the tree. Then they both take the ambulator to Jodah’s tunnel.

In Chapter 15 Teferi tries to talk to Windgrace, but ends up getting transported and left inside the Stronghold. As Windgrace leaves, Teferi once again begins to practise non-planswalker magic. Then Dinne appears. We then go back to Venser and Jodah who appear back at the tunnel. Jodah takes the tunnel and Venser takes the ambulator. However, something goes wrong for Venser and the Weaver King is heard whispering to him.

Venser wakes up in chapter 16, lost in the blind eternities. His journey failed halfway and now he’s stuck between worlds. There’s a beautiful description of all the different planes he can see, then Karn appears. He greets Venser, then disappears. Immediately afterwards, he reappears, though there is something slightly off about him. He removes Windgrace’s mark from Venser, then once again departs. Venser then continues on to Skyshroud.
Back to Jodah and he’s talking to Freyalise. She’s planning to cast another world spell and he gives her some sort of mirror thing to help her control it. Venser then materialises, inadvertently bringing the weaver king with him. The King giggles and gloats a bit, then leaves to take control of all the slivers and phyrexians in skyshroud.

In Chapter 17 the Weaver King rallies his army of slivers and phyrexians. We then go to Teferi, who is fending off Dinne using phasing spells. The Weaver King then calls Dinne away and Teferi levitates out of the Stronghold.

In chapter 18 we find out that Jhoria put a device in the ambulator that would act as a homing beacon to Karn. We also find out that the second Karn that Venser witnessed was actually an illusion of the Weaver King. Jhoria concludes that because Venser has visited the blind eternities and can teleport places, he is a planeswalker, though not one with near unlimited power. He can just planeswalk, not do any other magic as such. Jhoria then goes off in the ambulator to find Karn and Jodah tries to dissuade Freyalise from casting a second world spell (to be honest, I don’t really know what a world spell is.) He fails though, and Freyalise sends him back to the edge of the forest whilst battling hordes of slivers and phyrexians single-handedly.

In Chapter 19 Jhoria is looking for Karn. The Weaver King appears in Karn’s form but Jhoria sees through it and makes a swift exit. Afterwards the Weaver King makes conversation with Venser, before Jhoria comes back.
Then something interesting happens. As the Weaver King is overseeing his armies, another voice starts talking to him, claiming to be the one that brought the King out of the rift. We don’t learn the identity of this voice but it seems very omnipotent and leaves a lot open for speculation (Yawgmoth?)

In chapter 20, Teferi is out of the Stronghold and talking to Windgrace again. Once more he tries to convince Windgrace to sacrifice his power to close the rift and once more Windgrace refuses. Then he is contacted by Freyalise who tells him to protect skyshroud if she doesn’t make it.
Jhoria and Venser find Jodah who is still determined to return to Freylise, even if it means his death. He convinces Venser and Jhoria to return to Urborg, but the Weaver King paralyses Venser and forces him to teleport away. In Venser’s absence, Jhoria kisses Jodah, then goes back to the ambulator.

In chapter 21, Venser wakes up in a tree. The Weaver King doesn’t seem to be present so he decides to practise his planeswalking. He succeeds and teleports to Jodah’s tunnel. Jodah is there, about to search for Freyalise again. Venser however, pushes Jodah back into the tunnel, then closes it by slashing its edges with a sharp rock.
Meanwhile, Freyalise is holding off thousands of slivers and phyrexians. Desperately, she reforms all of skyshroud into a single massive tree, stands on top of it and begins to summon mana for her spell thing. The slivers and phyrexians begin to climb towards her. How epic.

Chapter 22, and AGAIN Teferi tries to convince Windgrace to close the rift. Once again, he flat out refuses. Jhoria, back in Venser’s workshop, is surprised as the real Karn appears before her.
Freyalise, on top of the massive tree, has a moment of clarity of epic proportions. She recognises Teferi’s sacrifice when he closed the Shivan rift, and so, pours herself into the skyshroud rift, closing it forever and ending her life.
You read correctly. FREYALISE IS DEAD.

In chapter 23, Freyalise is still dead. No plot device, no deux ex machina, she is actually dead. As the Skyshroud rift closes, the Urborg one doubles in size since they are connected somehow. A couple of small things happen, Jodah punches Venser for sending him back through the tunnel and the Weaver King announces that he is about to lay siege to Urborg. Karn announces that he cannot close the stronghold rift since he has to be saved for the Tolarian rift, since he is the only being able to travel through time.

In Chapter 24, Windgrace starts slaughtering phyrexians by the multitude. Karn then obliterates some more and convinces Windgrace to close the rift. Windgrace makes a pact with the land, imbuing some of his soul into it, before tearing the rift apart in his teeth. He succeeds and survives, but as the rifts disappears, it takes Windgrace with it.

In chapter 25 Karn informs everyone of the rift’s closing. They then set about planning the Tolarian rift’s closure. Karn has to go back in time to when the rift was small enough to close, back when Barrin obliterated everything. Venser agrees to come to the blind eternities to watch.

In chapter 26, Teferi gives everyone a brief then Karn and Venser set off. Karn leaves Venser in the blind eternities then begins his journey back in time, reminiscing about Jhoria and how good she is. Eventually, he arrives in Tolaria, AR 4205.
Meanwhile, in the blind eternities, Venser and the Weaver King have a final showdown and the King’s intentions become clear at last. Because Venser is a planeswalker but possesses no real power, the Weaver King wishes to hollow out his mind and live in Venser’s body, so that he can travel anywhere, unhindered by real planeswalkers. Hence the, “Sleep now” and “Rest.” The King then sets Dinne onto Jhoria and Teferi and won’t call him off until Venser gives in to his demands.
Back at Urborg, Teferi finally admits to Jhoria how Corus died. He attacked Teferi so Teferi phased him out just as he broke the mana star. Corus phased back in dead or something along those lines. At that moment, Dinne appears and starts throttling Jhoria.

The last chapter. Karn kills some of the phyrexians on Tolaria. Meanwhile, Venser finally kills the Weaver King. As the King is about to take control, Venser holds out his hands. In them are the two powerstones, his most precious items. He teleports, taking the faces of the powerstones with him, allowing their energy to explode outwards and incinerate the Weaver King. Dinne, devoid of a master, leaves Teferi and Jhoria alone, returning to the shadow.
Back in time, Barrin is about to blow up Tolaria. Karn reaches out to the rift and begins to close it. It tires him a bit but he succeeds. Then there is quite an ambiguous passage. Basically, something happens in the rift that terrifies Karn and causes him to flee back to the blind eternities, flickering back and forth across the multiverse so that no one can follow him.
Here’s some quotes to chew on: “I’m here Venser, I’m almost through. It’s not been easy, but… Urza’s Eyes, no!” “The silver golem felt a rush of corruption spread across his body and into his deeper self.” “An enemy I created has finally destroyed me.” “If you see Jeska, tell her not to follow me.”
I have no idea what it is. Mycosynth? I don’t have a clue.

And finally, the epilogue. Teferi apologises for being such a d***head and they all agree that the next stop is Zhalphir. At the very end, Jeska appears.

Ignorant tout de l'histoire, je traduis au pied de la lettre. Ce n'est pas ma faute si tout n'est pas très clair, donc.

Chapitre un : Tout ce qu'on sait, c'est que Jhoria lance un puissant sort "vitreux" (?), que Corus devient fou et qu'il la jette, elle et Venser, dans le vortex créé par le sort.

Dans le chapitre deux nous apprenons que comme Venser, Jhoria et Corus ont tous contribué à lancer le sort, ils sont immunisés contre ses effets. Ils quittent le nuage de verre créé par le sort et s'aperçoivent que Corus est mort, car il a détruit sa propre étoile de mana. Ils rejoignent alors Tefeiri, qui semble avoir définitivement perdu son aptitude à voyager entre les plans.

Dans le chapitre trois, Venser, Jhoria et Tefeiri voyagent à travers Shiv lorsque Venser commence à entendre une voix dans sa tête, lui disant "il faut dormir" et "repose-toi". C'est alors qu'un minuscule basilic sort du sable et Venser comprend alors qu'il a lui-même un pouvoir caché, lui permettant de se détacher de la réalité. A la fin du chapitre, le groupe rencontre des constructeurs Ghitu qui acceptent de les aider à reconstruire l'Ambulateur de Venser.

Dans le chapitre quatre, ils commencent la construction du nouvel Ambulateur (celui qu'on voit sur la couverture du livre) et Tefeiri accepte de rester en arrière pendant qu'ils l'utiliseront pour se rendre à Urborg.

Le chapitre cinq commence lorsque Venser et Jhoria testent l'Ambulateur. Tout a l'air en ordre, jusqu'au moment où Venser entend à nouveau la voix, panique, et tout disparaît dans une lumière blanche.
Nous sommes à présent du côté de Karn et Jeska, dans l'immensité aveugle, moins calmes que ce qu'on pourrait croire. Karn pense en effet qu'il y a un être mauvais, quelque part en dehors de cet endroit, mais il ne comprend pas où.
Nous revenons alors à Jhoria, qui a été transportée à Urborg, sans Venser ne soit visible nulle part. L'endroit est glacé, pour une raison mystérieuse, et un étranger approche. "Urza ?" murmure-t-elle. Mais ce n'est pas Urza, c'est juste que Scott McGough (l'auteur, ndlt) est incroyablement tordu. C'est Jodah, et il accepte de lui faire rencontrer Lord Windgrace, l'arpenteur de plans.

Bon, j'ai commandé le bouquin. ça va peut-être permettre d'y voir plus clair...
En attendant, faudra se contenter de ce résumé pas très clair.

Dans le chapitre six, Venser arrive à Urborg, et son ambulateur est bloqué dans la boue. Regardant aux alentours, il a la stupeur de voir des Phyrexians (dont la constitution semble étudiée pour résister aux basses températures) sortir de la faille de la Forteresse pour affronter des créatures appartenant à Windgrace. Ils sont finallement vaincus, et à ce moment, Windgrace vient vers Venser.

Dans le chapitre sept, Windgrace reproche à Venser d'avoir construit des artefacts dangereux. Il affirme que c'est le premier Ambulateur de Venser qui a déclenché la vague de froid sur son territoire et a permis aux phyrexians de franchir la faille. A ce moment, Venser entend à nouveau la voix étrange et Windgrace lui explique qu'il s'agit de la voix du "maître tisseur", une sorte de vampire psychique qui voyage d'esprit en esprit. Windgrace finit par comprendre que Venser n'est pas allié au "maître tisseur" et le force à devenir un serviteur loyal.

Le chapitre huit parle de l'histoire du Maître tisseur. C'était un nomade qui s'est réfugié dans la Cité des Traîtres de la Forteresse. Wohlrajh s'en est servi comme sujet d'expérience, en tordant son esprit jusqu'à la mort, le transformant en créature de l'ombre (référence probable à Shadow, "Distorsion" en français, ndlt). Son bras droit, Dinne, était un Paladin en Vec, qui fut donné comme jouet au Maître tisseur. Lorsque Wohlrajh tomba, le Maître tisseur fut arraché à la réalité avant d'être aspiré dans la faille. Et à présent, il avait une armée de phyrexians.
Après cette brève leçon d'histoire, nous revenons à Jhoria et Jodah. Ils parlent encore un peu du Maître tisseur, et rencontrent Venser et Windgrace.

Dans le chapitre neuf, Jodah est interrogé un moment par Windgrace, avant que ce dernier ne décide de ramener Téfeiri de Shiv. Téfeiri tente alors de raisonner Windgrace, essayant de le convaincre de sacrifier son pouvoir d'arpenteur pour fermer la faille. Windgrace refuse. Il décide alors d'emmener le groupe avec lui pour discuter avec Freyalise.

Le chapitre dix commence avec Dinne, le Paladin en vec de l'ombre (shadow, toujours), qui combat et vainc un chef d'Urborg sans aucune raison. Nous revenons ensuite à Windgrace et à son groupe, dans l'immensité aveugle, parlant à Freyalise. Rien de nouveau n'est révélé et ils repartent en laissant Jhoria avec Freyalise.

Deux chapitres vite fait entre deux cours :

Dans le chapitre 11, Windgrace relâche Téfeiri et Jodah, estimant qu'ils ne lui sont plus utiles. Jodah commence alors à élaborer un plan constitant à créer un tunnel pour sauver Jhoria de Freyalise, avant que Téfeiri n'arrive et le convainc que Jhoria a besoin de l'Ambulateur. Malheureusement, il est entre les mains de Windgrace. Venser arrive et approuve l'idée d'aider à récupérer l'Ambulateur pour l'apporter à Jhoria. Puis ils disent à Téfeiri d'aller se perdre (??)

Dans le chapitre douze, Jhoria regarde Freyalise combattre des hordes phyrexiannes avec son essaim de slivoïdes. Apparemment, les slivoïdes n'ont ni reine ni maître, et ils obéissent simplement à quiconque veut les contrôler. Tandis qu'ils ont le dessous, Freyalise demande à Jhoria d'aller trouver Radha, qui doit être en train de combattre des géants de glace ou autre chose quelque part.

Dans le chapitre 13, Jodah arrive à Linciel et dit à Jhoria de les retrouver quelque part lorsqu'ils auront l'ambulateur. Puis il emprunte son tunnel (pas compris si c'était un tunnel réel ou spatio-temporel) pour revenir à Urborg. Tandis que Venser et lui s'apprêtent à ramener l'Ambulateur, Téfeiri décide de tenter de raisonner Windgrace une nouvelle fois, probablement pour le distraire de ce que font Jodah et Venser.

Dans le chapitre quatorze, Jodah et Venser combattent les hommes de main de Windgrace pour récupérer l'Ambulateur. En le faisant, Venser est capturé par une chose semblable à un arbre à vrilles épineuses. Accidentellement, il utilise son pouvoir à nouveau, se coupe de la réalité, et le Maître tisseur le sauve secrètement en calmant l'arbre. Puis ils ramènent l'Ambulateur jusqu'au tunnel de Jodah.

Dans le chapitre quinze, Téfeiri tente de parler à Windgrace, mais il est abandonné dans la Forteresse. Tandis que Windgrace s'en va, Téfeiri essaie une fois de plus de le faire renoncer à son pouvoir d'arpenteur. Puis Dinne apparaît.
Nous revenons à Venser et Jodah, qui sont dans le tunnel. Jodah emprunte le tunnel et Venser prend l'ambulateur. Mais quoi qu'il en soit, quelque chose tourne mal pour Venser et le Maître tisseur lui chuchote des choses.
